What’s been filming in England? October – December 2023
Now that the US SAG-AFTRA strikes have reached a conclusion, the Filming in England team are now starting to receive more enquiries. However, we understand that there will be a slight delay before US productions resume shooting.
Nevertheless, we’ve taken a look at what’s been filming in each region this quarter – from independent films to returning dramas and more!
North West
Protection – New Pictures/ITV
Where? Liverpool City Region
New six-part series Protection set up for filming across Liverpool City Region in September. The series will follow the story of a long-standing witness protection officer, played by Happy Valley’s Siobhan Finneran.
Toxic Town – Broke & Bones/Netflix
Where? Greater Manchester and North of England
Brand-new Netflix series Toxic Town has been filming this autumn. The series will star Jodie Whittaker, Rory Kinnear and Robert Carlyle and is centred around the ‘Corby Poisonings’, one of the UK’s biggest environmental scandals.
The Responder Series 2 – BBC
Where? Liverpool City Region
Award-winning drama The Responder is back filming in Liverpool, once again starring Martin Freeman as Chris Carson.
Midlands
Phoenix Rise – BBC Studios
Where? Coventry, Warwickshire
Popular school drama Pheonix Rise has been back filming in the West Midlands this autumn, shooting its second series.
South West
McDonald & Dodds Series 4 – Mammoth Screen/ITV
Where? The Bottle Yard Studios & on location in Bristol and Bath
The fourth series of the ever-popular detective drama McDonald & Dodds is in production in Bristol and Bath.
Speak No Evil – Blumhouse Productions/Universal Pictures
Where? Gloucester, Gloucestershire
Adapted from a Danish thriller of the same name, Speak No Evil is a horror film starring James MacAvoy about a family who become entangled in another’s family life whilst on holiday. It was on hold during US industrial action and is expected to resume filming this November.
Land of Legend – Straightwire Entertainment Group
Where? Gloucestershire
Filming is underway for Rupert Everett and Tamsin Greig led independent adventure comedy Land of Legend – again shooting in Gloucestershire.
A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder – Moonage Pictures/BBC Three
Where? The Bottle Yard Studios and across the South West
Filming has just wrapped for BBC Three’s A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, a mystery thriller base on the book of the same name which filmed across the South West this year.
Heartstopper Series 3 – See-Saw Films/Netflix
Where? Lyme Regis, Dorset
Lyme Regis has welcomed some exciting productions in recently years, such as Warner Bros’ upcoming feature film Wonka. This October, the cast and crew of Netflix teen drama Heartstopper have been filming on the beach at Lyme Regis too!
South East & East
Albion – Far Away Films
Where? Buckinghamshire
Following the likes of Richard Linklater’s Boyhood, Albion is an ambitious time lapse film shooting over the course of a year centred around two friends, Kit and Sonny, who meet up as drifters and return to each other every season.
