With some of the biggest cinematic releases of the year, Barbie, Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1 and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, all choosing to film here in England, it’s no wonder that production continues to boom across the regions. From home grown productions to international films, discover the HETV and feature films that have been shooting across England (outside of London) from April – June this year.  

North West

Domino Day – Dancing Ledge Productions/BBC Three 

Where? Manchester 

Major new BBC Three drama Domino Day has started production in Manchester; the original series is written by BAFTA nominated Lauren Sequeira and centred around the life of a modern-day witch. 

Time Series 2 – BBC Television  

Where? Liverpool, Halton, Wirral and Knowsley  

There is a second series of Time on its way, this time featuring Jodie Whittaker, Tamara Lawrance and Bella Ramsay off the back of their success as Ellie in The Last of Us. What’s more, this production received investment from Liverpool Film Office’s LCR Production Fund!

Midlands

DI Ray Series 2 – HTM Ltd./ITVX 

Where? Birmingham  

The ever-compelling Parminder Nagra returns as DI Rachita Ray in ITV police drama DI Ray, which is filming its second series in Birmingham this summer. The pilot series of this was backed by Creative UK’s West Midlands Production Fund, which reinvests recouped finances into the West Midlands.

The Outlaws Series 3 – Big Talk Studios / Amazong Studios/Four Eyes 

Where? The Bottle Yard Studios and Bristol  

Stephen Merchant’s award-winning comedy thriller returns to Bristol to film its third series, shooting in locations across the city and at The Bottle Yard Studios.

Rivals – Happy Prince/Disney+ 

Where? TBY2, Bristol  

Disney’s adaptation of Jilly Cooper’s bestselling novel Rivals continues production at TBY2. Set in the prosperous world of 1980s England, Rivals is centred around the rivalry between two affluent men and will star David Tennant, Katherine Parkinson, Emily Attack and Aiden Turner. 

East & South East

The VeilFX/Hulu 

Where? Canterbury, Kent  

Written by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, The Veil is a new limited series starring Elizabeth Moss which follows the story of two women who play a deadly game of truth or lie.   

The GentlemenMiramax TV/Moonage Pictures/Netflix  

Where? South East  

Fan’s of the 2019 film The Gentleman will be happy to hear that Guy Richie himself is returning to direct a series based on the original film, which filmed in South East England this April.  

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Series 2 – Amazon Studios 

Where? Bray Studios and Bovingdon Airfield Studios 

The team behind Amazon’s The Lord of The Rings series are still busy filming the second series at  the brilliant Bray Studios and Bovingdon Airfield Studios. We can’t wait to see Middle-Earth return to our screens again!  

House of the Dragon Series 2 – HBO 

Where? Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden  

Production has begun on the second series of House of the Dragon. With the first series showcasing some beautiful locations across the South West and Midlands, the team have returned to England to where they are once again based at Warner Bros. Leavesden Studios in Watford.

North East

The Red KingQuay Street Productions/ITV Studios  

Where? North East  

First they brought us It’s a Sin, The Stranger and Nolly, and now Quay Street Productions are producing a mystery-thriller titled The Red King! This project is supported by the North East Production Fund, which is delivered and managed by North East Screen.
