Although there has still been a lingering impact from the US strikes last year, there have been some positive signs for production this year so far.

Want to find out what’s been filming over the last few months? Below, we’ve broken down the high-end TV and feature films which have been shooting across the regions (outside of London) from January to March 2024.

North West

Lazarus – Prime Video/Quay Street Productions 

Where? Manchester 

Following the success of Stay Close and Fool Me Once, another Harlen Coben story is in production, this time titled Lazarus. Produced by Quay Street Productions, the series stars Sam Claflin as a forensic psychologist experiencing disturbing events following the death of his father, played by Bill Nighy.

  

Funny Woman Series 2 – Potboiler Television/Sky Studios 

Where? Liverpool City Region 

Production has started in Liverpool for the second series of Funny Woman. Set in the swinging sixties, the story will pick up on Barbara Parker’s (played by Gemma Arterton) journey to comedy superstar and is expected to arrive on Sky Max later this year.

South West

The Winter of the Crow – Wild Mouse Production 

Where? Bristol 

The Winter of the Crow is a feature film starring Lesley Manville and Tom Burke. Set in Cold War-era Warsaw, the story follows Manville’s character, a visiting academic called Dr Joan Andrews. 

The Crow Girl – Paramount/Buccaneer Media  

Where? Bristol 

Adapted from The Crow Girl, a Swedish thriller written by Erik Axl Sund, Buccaneer Media’s new series follows a detective who turns to a psychotherapist for help to catch serial killer. Production has been underway in Bristol this year. 

Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light – BBC  

Where? Gloucestershire and The Bottle Yard Studios 

Following the success of 2015’s Wolf Hall, a second series is on its way! The Mirror and the Light will adapt the final novel in the late Hilary Mantels’ Wolf Hall series and has been filming across the South West.

East

Mandrake – ITV Studios 

Where? Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire 

Crime drama Mandrake has been filming in beautiful Hemel Hemsptead in Hertfordshire. Mandrake follows probation officer Cathy Madden, who is given the task of rehabilitating a notorious killer back into society after twenty years in jail. 

Ludwig – BBC One/Big Talk Studios  

Where? Cambridge, Cambridgeshire 

David Mitchell stars in comedy detective drama Ludwig, centred around an identical twin who takes over his brother’s identity in order to track him down after he’s disappeared. The crew started shooting in Cambridge in January this year. 

Strike Series 5 – Bronte Film and Television/BBC One 

Where? Bushey in Watford, Hertfordshire 

Adapted from the Robert Galbraith (aka J.K. Rowling) detective book series, Strike is back for a fifth series and has been filming in Watford, Hertfordshire.

South East  

Above The Below – Future Artists Entertainment/Lionsgate 

Where? Pinewood Studios, Buckinghamshire 

Idris Elba is co-directing and starring in Lionsgate’s survival thriller Above the Below, in which three astronauts are trapped in the depths of the ocean. Production is currently underway at Pinewood Studios.

Andor Series 2  – Disney/Lucasfilm 

Where? Pinewood Studios, Buckinghamshire
